Lesson: The Geometry of the Gnomon
Students will learn about the gnomon and its function in a sundial, and then identify and measure various types of angles related to shadow casting in their own environment – plus more!
Today, we honor the life and sacrifice of Lance Corporal Michael Lee Cruse, a brave U.S. Marine who gave his life in service to our country on this day in 1969 during the Vietnam War. He was just 19 years old.
A resident of Valley Station, Kentucky, LCpl Cruse served with unwavering commitment as a Machine Gunner (MOS 0331) with Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Amphibious Force.
At the time of his death, LCpl Cruse was deployed in the Quang Nam Province of South Vietnam. His body was recovered, and his memory has been preserved with honor ever since.
Beginning his tour in Vietnam on June 23, 1968, LCpl Cruse’s service exemplified the courage and devotion of a Marine who upheld the values of honor, courage, and commitment to the very end.
LCpl Cruse’s service and sacrifice are permanently memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at Panel W32, Line 77, and here at the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Today, we honor the life and sacrifice of Sergeant James Harvey Bennett, a brave U.S. Airman who gave his life in service to our country on this day in 1968 during the Vietnam War. He was just 24 years old.
A resident of Cynthiana, Kentucky, Sgt Bennett served with unwavering commitment with 14th Air Commando Squadron, 14th Air Commando Wing, Seventh Air Force.
At the time of his death, Sgt Bennett was deployed in the Ninh Thuan Province of South Vietnam. His body was recovered, and his memory has been preserved with honor ever since.
Beginning his tour in Vietnam on Aug. 2, 1967, Sgt Bennett’s service exemplified the courage and devotion of an Airman who upheld the values of honor, courage, and commitment to the very end.
Sgt Bennett’s service and sacrifice are permanently memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at Panel 39E, Line 42, and here at the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Today, we honor the life and sacrifice of Specialist Four Henry Lee Palmer, a brave U.S. Army Soldier who gave his life in service to our country on this day in 1969 during the Vietnam War. He was just 20 years old.
A resident of Madisonville, Kentucky, SP4 Palmer served with unwavering commitment as a Wheeled Tractor Operator (MOS 62L20) with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 15th Engineer Battalion, 9th Infantry Division, United States Army Vietnam.
At the time of his death, SP4 Palmer was deployed in the Dinh Tuong Province of South Vietnam. His body was recovered, and his memory has been preserved with honor ever since.
Beginning his tour in Vietnam on Aug. 16, 1968, SP4 Palmer’s service exemplified the courage and devotion of a Soldier who upheld the values of honor, courage, and commitment to the very end.
SP4 Palmer’s service and sacrifice are permanently memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at Panel W33, Line 87, and here at the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
