Today, we honor the life and sacrifice of Staff Sergeant Donald Coleman Gay, a brave U.S. Army Soldier who gave his life in service to our country on this day in 1970 during the Vietnam War. He was just 33 years old.

A resident of Frankfort, Kentucky, Sergeant Gay served with unwavering commitment as a Construction Equipment Supervisor (MOS 62N40) with 137th Engineer Company, 45th Engineer Group, 18th Engineer Brigade, United States Army Vietnam. 

At the time of his death, Sergeant Gay was deployed in the Quang Tin Province of South Vietnam. His body was recovered, and his memory has been preserved with honor ever since.

Beginning his tour in Vietnam on May 3, 1970, Sergeant Gay’s service exemplified the courage and devotion of a Soldier who upheld the values of honor, courage, and commitment to the very end.

Sergeant Gay’s service and sacrifice are permanently memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at Panel W6, Line 11, and here at the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

A resident of Louisville, Kentucky, Sergeant Alvey served with unwavering commitment as an Infantryman (MOS 11B4P) with Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, United States Army Vietnam. 

At the time of his death, Sergeant Alvey was deployed in the Quang Tin Province of South Vietnam. His body was recovered, and his memory has been preserved with honor ever since.

Beginning his tour in Vietnam on July 25, 1967, Sergeant Alvey’s service exemplified the courage and devotion of a Soldier who upheld the values of honor, courage, and commitment to the very end.

Sergeant Alvey’s service and sacrifice are permanently memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at Panel 27E, Line 52, and here at the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

A resident of Highland Heights, Kentucky, Sergeant Gabbard served with unwavering commitment as an Infantryman (MOS 11B40) with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, United States Army Vietnam.

At the time of his death, Sergeant Gabbard was deployed in the Quang Tri Province of South Vietnam. His body was recovered, and his memory has been preserved with honor ever since.

Beginning his tour in Vietnam on Nov. 16, 1968, Sergeant Gabbard’s service exemplified the courage and devotion of a Soldier who upheld the values of honor, courage, and commitment to the very end.

Sergeant Gabbard’s service and sacrifice are permanently memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at Panel W17, Line 15, and here at the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

A resident of Shelbyville, Kentucky, Lieutenant Lawson served with unwavering commitment as a Pilot (MOS 7562) with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262, Marine Aircraft Group 39, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Amphibious Force. 

At the time of his death, Lieutenant Lawson was deployed in the Quang Tri Province of South Vietnam. His body was recovered, and his memory has been preserved with honor ever since.

Beginning his tour in Vietnam on Sept. 3, 1968, Lieutenant Lawson’s service exemplified the courage and devotion of a Marine who upheld the values of honor, courage, and commitment to the very end.

Lieutenant Lawson’s service and sacrifice are permanently memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at Panel W43, Line 53, and here at the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

A resident of Pathfork, Kentucky, SP4 Perry served with unwavering commitment as an Infantryman (MOS 11B10) with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, United States Army Vietnam. 

At the time of his death, SP4 Perry was deployed in the Binh Long Province of South Vietnam. His body was recovered, and his memory has been preserved with honor ever since.

Beginning his tour in Vietnam on March 6, 1968, SP4 Perry’s service exemplified the courage and devotion of a Soldier who upheld the values of honor, courage, and commitment to the very end.

SP4 Perry’s service and sacrifice are permanently memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at Panel W44, Line 59, and here at the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
